Partner Guide
Help us prove it, then share it. We ask partners to judge us by the evidence we produce, and to join us in building it. We say plainly what exists today, what is only specified and what is still planned.

What a development partner will want to check
Each answer is on one page of this website. We link to it rather than repeat it.
- Context
Kyangwali Refugee Settlement, Kikuube District: 156,248 residents (UNHCR and OPM, 28 February 2026). Uganda includes refugees in national services, so refugee and host-community learners share schools. Kyangwali and the Years to 2030
- Who we serve
Secondary learners, S1 to S4, refugee and host-community, studying together: 277 learners at Spectrum in Term One 2026, 65% refugees and 41% girls. Girls fall from 44% of S1 to 13% of S4. Who We Serve
- How it complements existing education
SXLA works inside the national curriculum, in a school that serves refugee and host-community learners together. It does not provide primary education, run general relief or replace teachers. What We Do, and What We Do Not
- What exists, what is specified, what is planned
In use today: the school, and JEP with 40 JEP Scholars, ten laptops and school-based Wi-Fi. Specified: the Hybrid Edge JEP Studio, EDGE and the JEP Mobile Kit. Planned: partner schools from 2029, and the MTP schools. Projects Overview
- Evidence, stated honestly
SXLA's 2025 programme assessment is internal and not yet independently verified. A baseline and a comparison group start in 2027, and an independent mid-term review is planned for 2028. See the Evidence
- Governance and legal status
A company limited by guarantee (registration number 80034750112386), governed by a board of six directors. NGO Bureau registration is planned for 2027 and the first external audit for the 2027 accounts. Governance
- Safeguarding and data
A Safeguarding and Child Protection Policy, consent rules for every photograph and story, and learners' data kept local by design. Safeguarding and Privacy Notice
- How money is used
Every gift is recorded and reported against the purpose it was given for. Online donations are completed through Spectrum TechLabs Alliance (STA), a separate US-based partner. SXLA and STA
Where a partner could help
Equipping the Hybrid Edge JEP Studio at Spectrum, so learners have tools to investigate real problems; funding the evidence, from the 2027 baseline and comparison group to the independent review, so we know what learners gain; finishing the boys' dormitory and Spectrum Complete; and, after the 2027 review, reaching partner schools through the Hub-and-Box Model. Partners can see the work at Spectrum by arrangement.
Open technical questions we would like to work on
EDGE and the JEP Mobile Kit are design specifications, and several choices in them are still open. Each is a specific place where technical or research expertise could help. Today, JEP runs at Spectrum on ten laptops and school-based Wi-Fi; nothing below is installed yet.
Offline-first learning platform
The operating system and the offline learning platform are still to be chosen. They must work with no internet, then sync changes only, in priority order, when a connection returns.
Small local AI, used with care
A small local model in a narrow, supervised tutoring role, running on Studio equipment and never on assessed work. The model is still to be chosen, and learners' personal data never goes to public AI tools.
Solar power and energy
Solar and battery power for the edge server, the network and the Mobile Kit, sized after a site assessment. Design estimates are published; installation and monitoring are open.
Sensors and physical computing
Every Mobile Kit includes a sensor and physical computing kit, so learners can measure, test and build working prototypes. Which sensors it holds is still to be decided.
Measuring learning
Portfolios, assessment records and SXLA's five-level capability scale, with a baseline and a comparison group from 2027. Research design, blind scoring and independent review are areas where researchers could help.
Real challenges in science and engineering
JEP starts from real challenges, and remote mentors can join projects when a connection is available, in fields such as AI, energy, space science and engineering. Two JEP learners have already won a Best Mission Patch award in an international space design competition.
