From a school in a church to 277 learners, and what is planned next.
What has happened so far, and what is planned next.
The school opened in a church inside Kyangwali Refugee Settlement in 2020, with no external funding. People he asked for help said no, more than once. COVID-19 scattered the first learners in 2020 and 2021.
In 2022 a storm destroyed the church that doubled as the school's shelter, and only two learners remained. The rebuilding was funded through a birthday fundraiser among the Founder's own network. JEP began the same year with five laptops and one Wi-Fi connection.
Spectrum XLabs Alliance Ltd was incorporated on 11 March 2025 as a company limited by guarantee, registration number 80034750112386. Spectrum Secondary School had 102 learners in 2025.
Spectrum Secondary School has 277 learners (Term One 2026); 65% are refugees and 41% are girls. Construction of a new boys' dormitory began after funds arrived in August 2026. US$40,800 is still needed to finish the dormitory, a boys' latrine and beds for boys and girls.
Planned: Spectrum Secondary School equipped to the Hybrid Edge JEP Studio specification, for 40 JEP Scholars and 6 staff, so that learning continues when the internet does not, with a review at the end of 2027.
